Recap of San Jose Barracuda Awards and Honors

Barracuda Awards and Honors

The San Jose Barracuda with an infusion of new homegrown talent have gone from being a fringe playoff team to an AHL powerhouse. This has not gone unnoticed by the AHL media in their award selections. Some awards have yet be announced but here is the current Barracuda haul so far.

Danny O’Regan

Today Danny O’Regan won the Dudley “Red” Garret award as the AHL’s most outstanding rookie.  This award comes on the heels of being named to the AHL’s All-Rookie Team.  O’Regan, 23, currently leads all AHL rookies in scoring with 22 goals and 34 assists in 61 games for the Barracuda.  He also appeared for the San Jose Sharks in three games this season scoring a goal. Depending on what the Sharks do this summer O’Regan should be a lock to make the Sharks main roster next year. His 0.92 points per game percentage and using

His 0.92 points per game percentage and using @CRoatis‘s NHLE Calculator projects he’d be a 35  point player in the NHL make a strong case. He has been a catalyst all year for the Barracuda offense and has been excellent in the faceoff circle. O’Regan’s play this year would make Chris Tierney a palatable expansion draft loss should he be exposed and taken.

Troy Grosenick

On April 10, 2017, Troy Grosenick was awarded the Baz Bastien award as the AHL’s most outstanding goaltender. Playing in 47 games this year Grosenick has a goals-against average of 1.98 and a 9.29 save percentage.  He has a record of 30 wins second only to Jack Cambell of the Ontario Reign as well as 10 Shutouts. This is a real bounce back year for Grosenick who looked to have a path to the NHL all locked up before losing his starting job to Aaron Dell.

In addition to being named most outstanding goaltender of the year, Grosenick was also named to the First All-Star Team for the 2016-17 season.

Roy Sommer

After coaching a league most 1,478 games Roy Sommer was awarded the Louis A.R. Pieri as the AHL’s coach of the year. This is the first time that Sommer has won this award after 19 years of coaching San Jose Sharks prospects. The Barracuda under Sommer’s guidance have a record of 43-16-2 and a points percentage of .705 at this point in the season.

Barracuda defenseman Tim Heed was also named to the AHL’s second All-Star Team.

The Barracuda are back in action tonight at 7 pm against the Tucson Roadrunners before winding up their season in Bakersfield at 6 pm on Saturday.  Teal Tinted Glasses will follow Saturdays action.
