Sharks add Eric Fehr to bolster depth

Oh shit... Erik Fehr will fit right in.

But was it a Fehr Trade?

Sorry I just could not resist.  The San Jose Sharks made an effort to shore up their forward depth by acquiring Eric Fehr in exchange for a 2020 7th round draft pick. It had been widely rumored that the Sharks were looking for a bottom six forward for some time. Fehr, 32, spent most of his career with the Washington Capitals. In 566 games, he has scored 103 goals and 99 assists for 202 points. His best NHL season was in 2010-2011 where he recorded 21 goals and 18 assists for 39 points in 69 games. He was also a member of the Penguins team that beat the Sharks in the 2015-16 Stanley Cup Final. He scored a goal against the Sharks in that series making him a must-have for Doug Wilson.

Fehr was later moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he had trouble staying both healthy and in the lineup. He has spent most of this season being loaned to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. With the Gulls, he has scored 17 goals and 11 assists in 34 games.

A Doug Wilson must have indeed

Ian’s Thoughts

In reality, there is not much to analyze here. The Sharks have had a rotating cast of bottom 6 players this season from the Barracuda. Marcus Sorensen and Daniel O’Regan have not been able to secure their position in the lineup. Even Veteran players like Jannick Hansen have seen limited action benefiting mostly from a recent rash of injuries among Sharks forwards like Joel Ward. The trade certainly should not excite anyone. However, the cost of the trade, a 2020 7th round pick is not worth getting all uptight about.

The Sharks would have likely benefited more from a move that would push another player down the line up (Melker Karlsson, for example) rather than simply inserting a guy at the bottom. However, with the health of Joe Thornton very much in question, and the cost to acquire such a player very much higher, it would be hard to argue that such a move is the right move for the Sharks right now.

Your Thoughts
