Jasper Weatherby – Center

Most scouting services didn’t have him ranked and as an American player, it does strike me as both interesting and odd that he would go through the BCHL route over the USHL. He is also a double over-ager (20 years old). This player is a bit of a late bloomer but the Sharks have done well with this kind of pick in the past with players like Dylan Gambrell.
Still, his success in the BCHL can’t be denied. He lead the BCHL in scoring in both the regular season and the playoffs. His team won the BCHL Championship and although they came up short in the 2018 RBC Cup (Canada’s Junior A National Championship) Weatherby also lead that tournament in scoring as well. He was the also the BCHL’s MVP and First Team Allstar.
Still, you need to be cautious when getting excited about a 20-year-old who dominates in his over-age year. This is why a lot of scouting services may have looked the other way on this player. I really like the program that the University of North Dakota runs for hockey and if they like this player I am more than willing to give him a chance. Also, how do you say no to a guy whose spirit animal is Brent Burns?

Word on Weatherby: late bloomer, smart, competitive. Weakness: his skating #SJSharks

Two years ago, @jasperweatherby was at the Stanley Cup Final pulling for the @SanJoseSharks. Today, they drafted him. pic.twitter.com/K8tWuGwf2b
